I would like to make a comprehensive FAQ of questions that you may have about living in Zhengzhou. These can be about where to find employment, the process, places to go, basic services available, tourist information, what to expect from people there, what to expect from employers, visa questions, food... If you have a question, please put it in the comments of this post and I will try to answer it. I may even dedicate an entire post to your question.
I am also looking to interview you about your experiences living in Zhengzhou so that I can provide more perspectives beyond my own about what it is like to live there. If you are willing to be interviewed, please let me know in the comments.
Also, if you are a native of Zhengzhou, i'd like you to give me a native's perspective in an interview as well.
Thank you!
Hi, I have recently moved to Zhengzhou with my family. I am looking for a baby care center for my 1 year old son so my wife can have some time to herself. Thank you in advance.
ReplyDeleteHello,
DeleteI didn't have a baby while I lived there, so I am not familiar with these facilities. However, from my point of view I would be very reluctant to trust such a centre unless it came with an excellent reputation from the expat community. Your child is your greatest treasure and I am certain you would be interested in providing the highest standards of care if possible. The standards of childcare in China are quite different from elsewhere. I am not saying you should avoid these centres, but keep in mind that security and welfare of your child are paramount. Personally, I'd be terrified of things like child abduction for trafficking or low standards of care in which your child's needs would not be met or your child would not be cherished.
Whatever you decide, please be careful!
If you need me to help you with your research, I can perhaps contact some people living there.
Alternatively, you could look into hiring a woman to come to your place and help with childcare and/or housework. This is a very common practice in China, but perhaps a bit pricey (going by Beijing prices anyway, which is the last place for which I checked prices - Zhengzhou should be cheaper).

ReplyDeleteHi! My husband and I are living in Ireland, and we are anxiously awaiting work permits to teach English in Zhengzhou. I came across your blog shortly after receiving the job offer over Christmas, and since I wasn't having much luck finding any recent info from expats living in Zhengzhou, I more or less binge-read your entries.
ReplyDeleteEven though I'm sure the city has changed a lot since 2010/2011, I really appreciated your honesty in recording how you felt during each encounter. I was nearly in tears reading your last entry following up on what happened 'in the end'.
We've had a few hiccups with our applications, had to go to the Dept foreign affairs and the embassy twice to get documents stamped. Now my husband's middle name is causing mayhem. But I just re-read a couple of your blog entries about receiving the wrong invitation letter and all, within 2 days of your supposed departure date, and I'm feeling a little bit more relaxed, like it's expected to take longer than you think, and our employer doesn't seem too annoyed by the hold-ups.
Anyway, thanks for recording your experiences in Henan, it's helping my husband and me to prepare for the culture shock ☺
Suzie
